Illustration of new development on Fanshawe Road.

Fanshawe Road is situated to the southeast of Cambridge City Centre and was part of the circa 1950s post-war housing development. This land had historically been acquired by Jesus College, probably during the enclosures of the early 19th century and transferred to the borough of Cambridge around 1910. Like many other cities during the interwar period, Cambridge was expanding fast, and there was an urgent need for new housing.

The proposed layout of the new homes will create a new, central green space on the site, providing residents with an outdoor amenity space to enjoy. The new houses are located on the east and west of the site to tie into the scale and context of two-storey pitched roof homes along Fanshawe Road. The rich, biodiverse green space will create better pedestrian and cycle routes for the general public into Coleridge Recreation Ground and the wider city.

The central, communal spaces are designed to encourage residents to take ownership of the vegetable gardens that exist, increasing the potential for neighbours to meet and foster a community and a sense of wellbeing.

Further information about the public art programme for this site will be coming soon.
