Please join Helen Weinstein to experience the rich history of the people and businesses in Victorian times.
Discover just how unique the stories of houses and businesses are when Helen walks you around just one block of Petersfield – suitable for all ages – free for local residents!
You’ll learn not only about the Headly family who owned the Eagle foundry ironworks and coprolite mill but also about the people who lived and worked in our homes and streets closeby, such as bakers and dressmakers, engineers and blacksmiths, cow keepers and grooms, gardeners and laundresses. We’ll walk around the area pointing out places of former pubs and breweries, printing presses and timber yards, brickworks and dairies, schools and shops, what amounted to a densely inhabited neighbourhood of homes for workers and workplaces, a huge change from the previous fields of Barnwell because properties were built between the1860s and 1890s to cover the area of Petersfield.
Starting at 2 pm, convening by the front door of HistoryWorks ending at 3 pm at the back door of the former Eagle Foundry and Coprolite Works on Hooper Street CB1 2NZ
Please wear comfy shoes and warm clothes/rainwear. It will be very informal and sharing of memories will be encouraged!!
